- I am planning to get a Mac Pro and would like to know if you can connect a midi keyboard to a USB port on a Mac. My current setup is that I have the midi keyboard connected to the gameport on the SoundBlaster sound card in my Windows PC.
You can connect a USB or MIDI music keyboard to your computer to play and record software instruments.
Now that we are well in to 2017, we thought it was a good time to re-assess the MIDI keyboard situation for Mac users. We have some new contenders on the block that have pushed some old favorites. We need MIDI for the purpose to play some music and has more work to it. It works like there is a software working with MIDI for the sound purpose like the musical instruments. And while you are busing playing with your MIDI keyboard and as per the output from the computer you will get some other sound of the instrument like that of a saxophone.

Turn Your Mac Keyboard Into a GarageBand Piano – Let’s just say having a Mac or an iOS run device in your study room is one of the biggest perks you could ever have! The announcement of this application was done by Steve Jobs himself with John Mayer adding to the already existing glitz. Steve Jobs was an avid enthusiast of music and hence he launched an application called the Garageband. He was passionate about music and his efforts to make music more accessible can be gauged by the very idea of iTunes.
So what makes it so unique? Well, it is a line of digital audio workstations. Creativity was one of the trademarks of all Steve Jobs associated products. That enables the user to tinker and create multiple tracks with pre-made MIDI instruments. However, if you do not have a MIDI keyboard, Mac keyboard could also do the job and be turned into a virtual musical instrument.

Getting started with the software is fairly easy. Follow the following steps and you are good to go
- Launch the application- GarageBand which is located in the Applications folder.
- In the upper left corner of the window, click the New Project icon.
- Click the Empty Project Icon in the central window. Select the Choose button which is at the bottom right of your screen.
- Wait for the pop-up window to appear and then select the Software Instrument option. Click on the Create button.
- A list on the left side of the screen will appear. Among that list choose any instrument. For the sake of explanation, let’s say we chose Piano.
- Now look for a Window menu and select Show Music Typing.
- Now comes the most interesting part. Once the Musical Typing window opens up, there will be Mac keys showing up on your screen which correspond to actual musical keys. The Musical Typing window also displays key assignments for Pitch Bend, Modulation, Sustain, Octave, and Velocity.
- There will be an option for “Show Keyboard” in the window menu. This is a similar electric piano keyboard that you can use. The only difference would be that a larger number of octaves will be available without having the need to change settings.
Changing Octaves
While it may seem that changing octaves is a cumbersome task, it is not so. The Musical Typing keyboard displays an octave and a half at any one time which is the equivalent of the asdf row of keys on a standard computer keyboard. Changing octaves can be performed in one of two ways.
- You can use the ‘x’ key to move up one octave, or the ‘z’ key to move down one octave. You can move multiple octaves by repeatedly pressing the ‘x’or ‘z’
- The second way to move between various octaves is by using the representation of a piano keyboard near the top of the Musical Typing window. Grab the highlighted area on the piano keys, which represent the keys assigned to the typing keyboard and drag the highlighted section up and down the piano keyboard.
Stop dragging when the highlighted section is in the range you wish to play. Isn’t it cakewalk?
Onscreen Keyboard
The wonders of this application are not simply limited to the Musical Keyboard. You can also use a piano keyboard with a six-octave range. The piano keyboard, however, doesn’t assign any of the keys to correspond to your Mac’s keyboard. So in order to use the piano keyboard smoothly, you can only play this keyboard one note at a time, using your mouse or trackpad.
It does have the advantage of a wider range of notes, and playing a single note at a time is helpful for editing works you are creating. All enthusiasts who love tinkering, you better check this out! Follow a few steps and you should be right there:
- Launch Garageband which is located in the Applications folder in an attempt to view the onscreen keyboard
- Go on and select the New Project icon from the window (you can also open an existing project).
- Once your Project opens, select Show Keyboard from the Window menu.

Switching Between Keyboards
Another salient feature of this application is that it does not present a glitch while switching between these two keyboards. This unique perk enhances your user-friendly experience. You can make this switch in two ways:
- This is the easy way. All you have to do is make the switch by using the window.
- Or, Use two buttons which features on the top left corner of the piano. The first button looks like a couple of piano keys and will switch you to the classic piano keyboard. The second button, which looks like a stylized computer keyboard will switch you to the Musical Typing keyboard.
Connecting MIDI Keyboards
During its inception, the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) it used a 5-pin round DIN connector, along with multiple cables, to handle MIDI IN and MIDI OUT. However, these old trends have been replaced by the much lucrative use of standard USB ports to handle MIDI connections.
- The former need to use special adapters or interface boxes, or special driver software to connect your MIDI keyboard to your Mac will no more pose to be a problem. All you need to do is plug in your MIDI keyboard into an available Mac USB port.
- A MIDI device will be detected after you launch the app. Create a new project in the App using the Keyboard Collection option (this is the default when creating a new project) in order to try out your MIDI keyboard.
After the project opens up, touch a few keys on the keyboard. You should be able to hear the keyboard through it. If this does not happen, try resetting it’s MIDI interface, as follows.
Midi Keyboard Program For Mac

- Select the Audio/MIDI button from the Preferences.
- Your MIDI device should be detected; if not, click the Reset MIDI Drivers.
- You should now be able to play your MIDI keyboard through your Mac and record your sessions using GarageBand.
